Misfires


When a spell misfires, you take damage equal to the spell's level. Then, a number of things can happen depending on the spell and its area of effect. Roll a d20 and consult the misfires table to determine the outcome.

Outcome

1

The spell backfires, dealing damage equal to its level on you. If the spell is an AOE, the area is centered on you.

2

The spell targets your nearest ally. If the spell is an AOE, the area is centered on them.

3

You buff the target. It gains advantage on its next roll.

4

You summon a random creature. Their level depends on the spell. Based on the creature, it may or may not be hostile.

5

You lose the ability to cast this spell until you’ve completed a full rest.

6

There is a bright flash of light. You and all creatures within 30 feet of you are blinded for a turn.

7

You teleport 1d20 * 5 feet in a random direction.

You morph into a random helpless animal. You revert back after taking a hit or upon completing a full rest.

A portal to a random destination appears.

You cast a random spell at the target from your known spells.

All coins on your person transmute down one step in value. (gold to silver, silver to copper, copper to iron)

There is a loud bang that can be heard half a mile away. You and anyone within 30 feet of you suffer disadvantage to checks involving hearing until your next full rest.

You instantly age 1d4 * 5 years

Your spell does triple its effects, but you forget it afterwards. You will have to relearn the spell to use it again.

You learn a random spell.

A temporary vacuum forms, pulling all creatures within 10 squares you 3 squares closer.

The nearest creature’s pants burst into flames.

You are affected by an aura of truth telling for 1d4 days. You loudly exclaim embarrassing secrets at inappropriate times and blurt out information the party would rather keep secret.

Everyone around you is convinced your spell worked, even though it didn’t.

The GM rolls on the secret misfire table.
