When a spell misfires, you take damage equal to the spell's level. Then, a number of things can happen depending on the spell and its area of effect. Roll a d20 and consult the misfires table to determine the outcome.
d20 | Outcome |
---|---|
1 | The spell backfires, dealing damage equal to its level on you. If the spell is an AOE, the area is centered on you. |
2 | The spell targets your nearest ally. If the spell is an AOE, the area is centered on them. |
3 | You buff the target. It gains advantage on its next roll. |
4 | You summon a random creature. Their level depends on the spell. Based on the creature, it may or may not be hostile. |
5 | You lose the ability to cast this spell until you’ve completed a full rest. |
